Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the area of Helaozhuang, Fanghushan District, Feixi County, Anhui Province. It was named by Yang Zhijian as the “Fanghushan Group” in 1959.

Synonym:(防虎山组)


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part represents grey-yellow and grey-white thick-bedded conglomerate, sandy conglomerate, medium-, and coarse-grained feldspar-quartz sandstone, intercalated with siltstone and mudstone, with a thickness of about 219 m. Upper part consists of grey-white pebble-bearing gritstone, medium- and fine-grained sandstone, intercalated with dark-grey thin-bedded siltstone, carbonaceous shale and coal seams. Thickness is about 219 m and 255 m for the lower part and upper part, respectively.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in an unconformable contact with the underlying Archean Hoqiuyan Gr

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Zhougongshan Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed in a limited area, being found to occur only in the areas of the Fanghu Mt and Chaotou of Feixi County. Both its lithology and thickness tend to be consistent, with its grain size getting finer in ascending order; with a thickness commonly of about 474 m.

Fossils

It yields bivalves as represented by Sibireconcha cf. anodontoides, Ferganoconcha sp., and plant fossils as represented by Neocalamites carrerei, N. cf. hoerensis, Cladophlebis sp., Pityophyllum nordenskioidi and Cycadocarpidium erdmanni.


Age 

Schematic strat column in the previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Zhougongshan Fm spanned the late-Early Jurassic.
